Exodus 20:1-11; Deuteronomy 6:4-9; Gospel of Matthew
An authentic relationship with God means we give him:
1. Our heart
2. Our will
3. Our mind
4. Our body
5. Our finances
6. Our future
Israel was given five ways to honor God through offerings and they were all related to first fruits of the harvest or animal sacrifices.
The tithe was also an agriculturally based offering that was began as a way to support the tribe of Levi, who had no inheritance in the promised land. The tithe is not commanded in the New Testament.
Jesus, Peter, and Paul, said that there is a purpose for us to be generous.
1. Outward sign of our surrender of our whole lives to God.
2. Meet others needs.
3. Spiritual growth & strength.
4. Our work and wages are meant as a means to a greater end.
Main Point: Our giving to God is not out of obligation or by rule or law – but an outward image of the relational transformation happening on the inside of us.
